Current Rotation

  • Phonk is directly inspired by 1990s Memphis rap and characterized by nostalgic funk samples, often accompanied by vocals from old rap tapes. UG Rap is non-mainstream, typically more sample heavy with a preference for boom-bap drum patterns.

  • Has its roots in African-American gospel music and rhythm and blues- which is also included in this collection. Soul music became popular for dancing and listening in the 1950’s & 60’s, where U.S. record labels such as Motown, Atlantic and Stax were influential during the Civil Rights Movement.

  • Two popular music genres that originated in Jamaica. Distinct in their own right, Reggae is known for its soulful, melodic sound and focus on social commentary. Dancehall is known for its energetic, rhythm-driven sound and focus on the MC or “DJ” as the primary artist. Grime can be found in this collection*
